Brief Background to EWEN

The European Workshop on Equine Nutrition aims to bring those working in equine nutrition (in Universities and institutes as well as the industry itself) together with those responsible for the feeding and management of horses so that ideas, knowledge and experiences can be shared and beneficial areas for future research highlighted.

The aim of the meeting is to provide up to date reviews on key subjects within the topic area, provide a forum for the presentation of the latest advances and to promote discussion between the researchers and the end users within the horse industry (especially feed companies, nutritionists, veterinarians etc.). The workshop is placed under the umbrella of the European Association of Animal Production (EAAP). EWEN is run by an international scientific committee (Chairman: Manfred Coenen) and a bi-annually changing local organising committee.

The last European Workshop on Equine Nutrition was held in Finland in 2008 on the topic of “Nutrition for the Exercising Horse” and was very well received. Before this the workshop was held in Italy in June 2006 and covered the important topic of ‘Nutrition and feeding of the Broodmare’. Previous workshops in 2001 and 2003 in France (under the umbrella of ENESAD) covered energy and protein systems and the growing animal respectively. In 2010 EWEN will be at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, UK in collaboration with the British Society of Animal Science.
